Having worked in Air Defense, IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) transponders “should” be operating on military aircraft during peace time. An approaching unidentified aircraft, can initially be “actively” identified with radio or visual means. The orientation of this drone, was from the direction of a possible hostile source and probably not in a safe passage corridor. The transponders were turned off. The Russians visually identified the “unknown” drone, surmised the mission to be nefarious and took actions they deemed appropriate in face of the ongoing hostilities.
