In chapter One we brought out the definition for the words gnostic and esoteric, because they join together in the Bible – that is, a direct knowledge of the Godhead and who they are, and that this knowledge is only given to the few who will diligently search the matter out. To refresh your memory, here is the definition of gnosis:

“Gnosis (γνῶσις) refers to knowledge of the second kind. Therefore, in a religious context, to be “Gnostic” should be understood as being reliant not on knowledge in a general sense, but as being specially receptive to mystical or esoteric experiences of direct participation with the divine. Indeed, in most Gnostic systems the sufficient cause of salvation is this “knowledge of” (“acquaintance with”) the divine. This is commonly identified with a process of inward “knowing” or self-exploration, comparable to that encouraged by Plotinus (c. 205 – 270 AD). This is what helps separate Gnosticism from proto-orthodox views, where the orthodox views are considered to be superficial.[23] The inadequate take then requires a correct form of interpretation. With “gnosis” comes a fuller insight that is considered to be more spiritual. Greater recognition of the deeper spiritual meanings of doctrines, scriptures, and rituals are obtained with this insight. However, as may be seen, the term “gnostic” also had precedent usage in several ancient philosophical traditions, which must also be weighed in considering the very subtle implications of its appellation to a set of ancient religious groups

And the word “esoteric” which means:

Definition of ESOTERIC

“a : designed for or understood by the specially initiated alone <a body of esoteric legal doctrine — B. N. Cardozo>

b : requiring or exhibiting knowledge that is restricted to a small group <esoteric terminology>; broadly : difficult to understand <esoteric subjects>

a : limited to a small circle <engaging in esoteric pursuits>

b : private, confidential <an esoteric purpose>

: of special, rare, or unusual interest <esoteric building materials”.

These definitions are of extreme importance when discussing TRUE Christianity vs. the fraudulent Christianity that Jesus warned would come to the Church as time went by, and indeed it has.

As we said, modern Christians would declare any sort of Gnosticism or esoteric concepts an anathema, something to be totally Satanic and demonic, New Age mysticism or totally of the occult world. Our question is simple: is that belief correct, or is it false? As we said in Chapter One, if you cannot bring yourself to be intellectually and scripturally honest, then don’t read further, for this debate requires both.

The question for this chapter is simple. Could we truthfully and accurately declare that Jesus Christ Himself was a gnostic, and further, did He teach any form of esoteric concepts? We will answer that question with Scripture alone. Many people and TV programs go to great lengths to prove that the Holy Bible does not contain any gnostic or esoteric concepts, and that Christians only need to believe and have faith in Jesus and His work on the cross, and that is their ticket to heaven. We will examine that issue as well for in fact it flies in the face of multitudes of Scripture.

So the first question is this, did Jesus claim Himself a gnostic and did He claim any esoteric beliefs?

Matt 11:25-27

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Now remember the definition of gnostic, that is, a direct relationship with the divine, and a superior knowledge of spiritual matters by direct contact and revelation of the Divine and the subject soul. Now obviously, one would have to admit that Jesus is not only claiming to be a gnostic, but the Chief of all gnostics in this verse, because He is claiming to be the ONLY ONE ON EARTH to have a direct spiritual knowledge of God the Father at this specific time. That is highly esoteric as well, for the meaning of the word means to have a confidential, secret, hidden spiritual knowledge revealed only to the a select few. It is a direct confirmation that Jesus was a gnostic. There is much more, even though  these verses prove it as written.

John 10:14-15

14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Once again Jesus claims a very special relationship with God the Father and has direct spiritual knowledge of the Father. That is the very definition of a gnostic. He goes a bit further in the above verse: He claims to have a direct SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE OF HIS SHEEP, and they have a DIRECT SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE OF HIM. How does anyone claim this is not a fully experiential spiritual knowledge of Jesus Christ towards His sheep, and His sheep KNOW HIM? How does anyone claim that this is NOT fully gnostic and further fully esoteric? One has to be in total denial and totally blind not to understand what is clearly and plainly written.

Jesus Christ is bluntly claiming gnostic knowledge of God and His true followers, called the sheep. The sheep in all cases are those that did as they were commanded and came into a gnostic relationship with the Lord. We can prove this easily a bit later. But for now here is another verse:

John 14:17-24

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.”

Could anything be more direct, more bluntly put? This is why modern Christianity is such a deception and a lie. The modern Christian has been taught and firmly believes that faith and belief alone are all that is necessary to be saved. Jesus says something here that is openly gnostic and openly esoteric, and claims that THE WORLD DOES NOT KNOW HIM AT ALL, and further, the WORLD KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE REAL TRUTH WHATSOEVER. Is that why Job says that true wisdom and true understanding ARE NOT TO BE FOUND AMONG THE LIVING? THAT IT CANNOT BE FOUND ON EARTH AT ALL? The real truth behind our reality is a secret, and is hidden from the world. It is only revealed to those who DO AS CHRIST COMMANDED. Jesus openly declares that ONLY THOSE WHO LOVE HIM AND KEEP HIS WORDS WILL COME INTO DIRECT EXPERIENTIAL AND OPEN CONTACT WITH HIM. Inasmuch as Jesus is a SPIRIT, and is now operating the affairs of the Universe, and sits in HEAVEN, then how is Jesus to come to the believer? BY FULL EXPERIENTIAL MANIFESTATION OF HIMSELF.

In other words, Jesus will OPENLY REVEAL HIMSELF personally to the obedient believer who does as he/she was told. This is a direct SPIRIT TO SPIRIT manifestation. The believer will experimentally KNOW who Jesus Christ is. The secret and the hidden aspects of who Jesus Christ really was and is will be openly shown the believer. To deny that is to be a fool and it will take you direct to ruin.

Did not Jesus say in the above verse that IN THE DAY OF THAT VISITATION that the believer WILL EXPERIENTIALLY KNOW? That the believer will ACTUALLY KNOW? Not believe in, not have faith in, but actually KNOW by direct revelation?

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

How could a believer KNOW? Jesus does not say “take it by faith that you know” or “believe it in your heart that you know” but said plainly and bluntly that the believer will KNOW in an ABSOLUTE WAY who He is, and who God the Father is. Remember back a ways we read this:

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

The creator of the Universe is hidden. But right here Jesus says that all things were delivered to Him, and He could REVEAL HIMSELF AND GOD THE FATHER to whomsoever was obedient to His commands. To deny any of this is to deny God and the written Word. It does not require interpretation, it requires ACCEPTANCE AS A CHILD. Daddy God said it, and that is all that is required.

Now the Christian of today will say “it does not mean that” or “it could not mean that”, because their traditions superseded the Word of God. They scream, “You are an anathema, you bring another gospel, you bring another Christ, this is heresy, you are a heretic.” Thus do they damn themselves by their own words.

Here is another blatantly gnostic remark of the Lord’s:

John 17:1-3

17 “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

This is one more verse of gnostic and esoteric knowledge. Jesus here is very blunt as to what ETERNAL LIFE REALLY IS ABOUT. He tells us so directly it’s hard to understand why people don’t get the point. Eternal life, that is, “being born from above”, or “born again” is defined by the Lord Himself as having a gnostic knowledge, that is, fully experiential knowledge of the Father and Jesus Christ. The true believer is TO KNOW EXPERIENTIALLY GOD THE FATHER AND JESUS CHRIST. They are to experientially know this. More on this later. Notice Jesus does not say this:

“And this is life eternal, that they might BELIEVE and HAVE FAITH IN the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent.”

Modern Christians claim that is EXACTLY WHAT IS SAYS, for they claim they are saved by FAITH AND BELIEF, and refuse to even admit that Jesus Christ claims something else. This is why modern Christianity has no power, is totally of this world, and because it does good deeds thinks all is OK with the Lord. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Here is another gnostic comment from the Lord:

John 5:19-22

19” Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:”

Now one might want to ask how is that Jesus knows and sees what the Father does if He is not in DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH HIM? Is that not fully gnostic? Is it not fully esoteric? Of course it is!!

And then this verse:

John 5:36-37

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

This is rather exclusive don’t you think? In fact no one else is involved here, just Jesus and the Father. That is esoteric to the extreme!! He goes further and says He has heard the voice of the Father and seen His shape obviously, while no one else in the world has. That is also very exclusive, confidential and hidden knowledge of the Godhead. How does anyone get around this?

John 6:45-48

45 “It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.”

This is quite blunt, is it not? Jesus is claiming here that HE ALONE AS SEEN AND KNOWS THE FATHER. Once again we find a gnostic knowledge and a very esoteric relationship.

John 14:10

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

We could go on and on, but what’s the point? Either you will believe what the Bible says, or you will not. Either you will accept the gnostic and esoteric nature of Jesus Christ or you will not. And either you will search this matter out for yourself or you will not. It is not the Lord’s will that any perish, but rather that they come to a gnostic and esoteric knowledge of the Lord and be saved, as we saw in John 17 or they will not. Now we come to a very scary statement of scripture that proves the gnostic involvement in salvation – and verifies John 17 and the prayer of Jesus for His true sheep. We find it in Matthew Chapter Seven and why Jesus Christ rejects out of hand MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS.

Matt 7:21-27

21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

Why did Jesus Christ reject these Christians? He says why very bluntly, as usual – HE DID NOT COME TO GNOSTIC KNOWLEDGE OF THEM, NOR THEY WITH HIM. That is the only reason given. There is no other – they failed to take the commands of Christ to enter in at the STRAIT GATE and walk the NARROW WAY UNTO TRUE ETERNAL LIFE, which is IN THE SON. Recall that Jesus said that ETERNAL LIFE IS KNOWING IN AN EXPERIENTIAL WAY HIMSELF AND GOD THE FATHER. Those are His words. He also said that He and the Father were one. Do you see? You are to SEARCH OUT AND FIND JESUS CHRIST, not just believe in Him and have FAITH in Him.

How does one do that? ENTER IN AT THE STRAIT GATE. There is no other way. There is only ONE WAY IN.

So Jesus was very blunt here. You hear His words, and if you do them (enter in and walk the narrow way), or you hear His words and do them not. If you do, you are wise, if you do not, you are a fool. There is nothing more important than salvation of the human soul and spirit. It is only there that true wisdom and true understanding are found. That is why Jesus told you to pick up YOUR CROSS and FOLLOW HIM. He went to Calvary and there He died upon the cross and made a way for us to ENTER IN. If he did it all for us, then why did He command you to pick up your own cross?

In Chapter Three, we will examine if the Lord commanded all of us to become gnostics and to have an esoteric knowledge that only a few have. It will be proven that indeed He did, and indeed He commanded us to do so. It is not Satanic, it is not New Age, and it is not of the occult. It comes direct from the mouth of our Lord and Savior. To heed them is to be wise, to reject them is to be fool and to go into eternal ruin.
